As the days get a little longer in New England, Newport warms up with restaurant openings, festivals and shop offers sure to bring locals and tourists together for the start of another gorgeous season in the City by the Sea. Check out these top 8 picks from local shop owner and curator, Kristen Coates.
1 - TSK
TSK has reopened and it is glorious. The group behind Mission and Winner Winner have revived its first restaurant in its new location at 509 Thames Street (formerly The Revolving Door). The food is brilliant with a menu filled with seasonal ingredients and the wine list and mixed cocktails are divine. Insider note: Reservations recommended, sit at the bar for the lively atmosphere and open-air kitchen.
2 - Gurney's Goats
Visit the goats on Goat Island! Cornelius and William reside at their home fashioned to look like a miniature version of the Bellevue Avenue mansion, Marble House at Gurney’s. During the warmer months, take the water taxi from OldPort Marine to Gurney’s dock for $3 each way (plus gratuity) and skip the traffic and parking to enjoy a miniature harbor tour.
The Fermentation Class at 41 North's beautiful Oval Bar includes 5 wine tastings from a particular region accompanied by light food pairings for $35 per person. Rsvp recommended and be sure to mention any food restrictions at the time of booking.
Every Friday pick up a bouquet of fresh flowers, locally and responsibly sourced for only $12 at Kristen Coates, Newport’s premier art and home store at Bowen's Wharf. The shop front is always picture perfect with seasonal florals and greens which makes for a great place to take Instagram-worthy photos!
Reopening May 8, the Aquidneck Growers Market on Memorial Boulevard is a local favorite for fresh vegetables, dairy, meats and grains from dozens of local farmers and makers. Then head across the street to Newport Wine Cellar & Gourmet for one of proprietor and wine maker, Maria Chiancola’s wine tastings. If you can't make it on a Wednesday, stop by the cheese shop and wine store to pick up a few snacks and ask to have your bottle uncorked to enjoy on their outdoor terrace which faces the courts of the Tennis Hall of Fame. Quite the afternoon delight!
6 - Volvo Ocean Race
During the month of May, enjoy one of the sports Newport is most known for, sailing! The highly anticipated Volvo Ocean Race returns three years later as the only North American stop during the around the world race. May 8 - May 20 check out the village set up at Fort Adams State Park, accessible by limited water taxi through OldPort Marine. In-port races to take place May 19 and leg start May 20.
May 19-20, Newport Oyster Festival at Bowen’s Wharf, presented by Moët & Chandon. With more than 13 growers, enjoy local oysters from around the Ocean State paired with fine champagne and cocktails. For tickets and more details visit the events page for Bowen's Wharf.

As the warmer weather arrives, there is no better place for an afternoon or evening cocktail than The Black Pearl patio. Having undergone serious renovations in 2017, the bar has become even more popular for tourists and locals alike, plus the chowder is legendary!
